Bridge to Nowhere

In the 1920s, returned WWI soldiers were given land in the Mangapurua Valley to farm. The bush won. Today, you ride through what they left behind — and the only way out is a jet boat down the Whanganui River.

The Mangapurua Track is 38km of remote backcountry through Whanganui National Park: Papa clay terrain, regenerating bush, and the ruins of the soldier-settler farms the valley slowly took back. The Mangapurua Trig at the 12km mark is the high point — from there it's a long descent to the river.

The Bridge to Nowhere itself is exactly what the name says: an intact concrete arch bridge, deep in the bush, that no road ever reached. You ride across it near the end of the valley.

At Mangapurua Landing the trail simply stops at the river. A 45-minute jet boat run takes you and your bike down the Whanganui to Pipiriki, where our van brings you home to Ohakune.

Know before you go

This is a remote backcountry trail. We provide a live GPS SPOT tracker and PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) on every group. Full briefing covers emergency protocols, current track conditions, and what to do if something goes wrong. There's no easy exit. We plan for that.

Good to know

I'm riding solo or as a pair — can I still go?

Usually, yes. Solo and duo riders can be added to existing group departures — check availability at checkout or give us a call.

Do I need to pre-book?

Yes — pre-booking is essential. The jet boat leg is coordinated per group and can't be arranged on the day.

How hard is it really?

Grade 3 in the dry with real remoteness; Grade 4 or worse when wet. You need solid fitness for a full day and confident bike handling on clay.
