Timber Trail

The Timber Trail follows a 1930s tramway through the Pureora Forest — one of the North Island's last great tracts of podocarp forest. One of New Zealand's nine Great Rides. The title is earned.

85km from Pureora to Ongarue over two days, through giant rimu and tōtara, across some of the longest suspension bridges on any New Zealand trail. Most riders overnight around Piropiro Flat — we move your luggage there while you ride, so you carry a day pack and nothing else.

Grade 2–3 the whole way: it's about the distance and the place, not technical riding. If you can spend two days on a bike, you can do the Timber Trail.
